Ever had one of those nights, maybe you think you are dreaming, or is it real?
The room was a black abyss, a void where light dared not tread. I stood there, disoriented, my fingers grazing the icy walls. The air clung to my skin like a shroud, and the silence was oppressive – a weight that pressed upon my chest.
“Foolish,” I chided myself. “You know this room. You’ve walked its contours a thousand times.” But familiarity had abandoned me, and the darkness1 mocked my confidence. Each step was a gamble, a blind leap into the abyss.
I stumbled over unseen obstacles – the forgotten chair, the rug bunched up like a slumbering serpent. My breath caught as I collided with the chest of drawers, its sharp edge biting into my hip. The room held secrets, and they whispered malevolently in the void.
“Who else is here?” I asked, not wanting an answer. What spectres linger in this lightless chamber? I wondered. Fear gnawed at reason, and I strained my ears for any sound – a creak, a sigh, a phantom footfall. But the room remained silent, its secrets buried in the inky blackness.
And then, a glimmer – a distant memory of illumination2. I reached for it, desperate. My hand brushed against the switch and slid away, and with trembling fingers, I tried again, there it was, I pushed the switch. The room gasped as if awakening from a long slumber.
Light flooded in – a cascade of revelation. The walls, once menacing, now bore witness to my vulnerability. The shoes lay strewn like forgotten soldiers, their laces entangled in defeat. The chest of drawers, no longer a foe, stood apologetically in the corner.
But it was the mirror that held me captive. There, reflected in its silvered surface, was a face – my face – etched with lines of uncertainty. The darkness had concealed my flaws, but the light revealed them all: the doubts, the regrets, the hidden3 sins.
“This is what you truly are,” the mirror whispered, like a serpent. “No more illusions.”
And then, a voice – a celestial echo that pierced the room. “Repent4” it said, “for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
I blinked, disoriented. The room wavered, its boundaries dissolving. Was this a dream? Or had the veil between worlds thinned, allowing glimpses of eternity?
“The people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light,” the voice continued. “And for those in the shadow of death, a light has dawned5.”
I stepped toward the window, drawn by an otherworldly glow. Beyond the glass, constellations danced a celestial waltz. The Lord’s invading light pushed back the night, revealing a world transformed.
“To a world living in darkness,” the celestial voice intoned, “the good news of Jesus Christ is light.”
And so, I stood there, bathed in grace, my heart a lantern against the night. The room, once oppressive, now pulsed with hope. The shoes, the chest of drawers, the mirror – they all whispered of redemption.
“Fear not,” the voice promised. “The darkness cannot withstand the dawn.”
And as the first rays of morning kissed the horizon, the space that was once covered in darkness became fully illuminated – a sanctuary for the seeking6 soul.
