Faith in Jesus, Overcoming Fear
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible – Hebrews 1:1-3
Brothers and sisters in Christ, grace and peace to you this morning. I want you to imagine for a moment a child standing on the edge of a swimming pool, eyes fixed on a parent calling them from the other side.
The water is deep, dark and unknown, the leap seems risky – but the child’s trust in the parent is unshakable. That child’s heart is filled with confidence, not because the pool has given any guarantee, but because of the bond of love and the assurance that “Mummy” or “Daddy” will save them.
In many ways, our walk with God resembles that child at the pool’s edge. We stand on the brink of the unseen, called by the voice of our Heavenly Father to step out in faith. Yet so often we hesitate. We clutch the edge, worried about what lies beneath.
Today, we explore the importance of faith – that vital trust which moves us from fear to freedom, and from doubt to divine adventure.
What Is Faith?
Faith is more than a vague wish or a hopeful sentiment. As Hebrews 11:1 tells us; “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”. It is the firm foundation on which our entire spiritual life is built. Without faith, we cannot please God. “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6)
- Confidence in God’s Promises. Faith means believing that when God says “Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:6). He is absolutely true to His word.
- Assurance in the Unseen. We do not see the wind, yet we feel its power. Likewise, we may not see angels, but Scripture assures us they surround those who trust in the Lord.
- Action Beyond Sight. True faith moves us to step out. Jesus challenged Peter, “Come” (Matthew 14:29). Even though Peter saw the raging waves, he took a step and walked on water – until doubt crept in.
Why Faith Matters
- It Aligns Our Hearts with God’s Will. When we believe that God is who He says He is, our desires begin to match His. We pray for His Kingdom above all else. (Matthew 6:33)
- It Transforms Trials into Triumphs. Faith does not exempt us from hardship. Joseph suffered prison; David faced Goliath; Paul endured shipwrecks; Job endured physically and mentally. Yet their faith in God turned every setback into a stepping stone toward His purposes.
- It Unlocks Miracles. Jesus said, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20). He healed the blind, raised the dead, and calmed the storms – demonstrating that God’s power flows through our trust in Him.
Faith in Action: Practical Applications
- Daily Prayer and Scripture Reading. Faith grows as we feed on God’s Word and talk with Him in prayer. Romans 10:17 says, “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.” Make time every morning to meditate on a verse and speak with God openly.
- Obedience in Small Things. When God prompts you to extend kindness, forgive an offence, or share your testimony – do it. Step by step, obedience strengthens your confidence in His voice and timing.
- Community and Encouragement. Hebrews 10:24–25 urges us not to give up meeting together. Surround yourself with fellow believers who will encourage you, pray for you, and hold you accountable as you grow in faith.
- Stepping Out in Generosity. Faith trusts that God will provide even when we give sacrificially. Consider how the widow’s mite (Mark 12:41–44) honored God more than great sums given out of abundance. Give when it’s risky, and watch God multiply your faith.
Examples from Scripture
- Abraham: Called to leave his homeland and trust God for a promised child, Abraham believed against all hope (Romans 4:18–21). His faith was credited to him as righteousness.
- Moses: Leading Israel out of Egypt required faith that God would open the Red Sea and conquer mighty kings (Hebrews 11:29–30).
- Mary: A teenage girl told she would bear the Son of God. With trembling, she said, “I am the Lord’s servant… May your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38).
- The Centurion: Though a Roman officer, he believed Jesus could heal his servant with a word. Jesus marvelled, “I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith” (Matthew 8:5-13).
Growing Our Faith
Just as muscles strengthen with exercise, faith grows when we:
- Face Challenges with Prayer. Bring fears and uncertainties to the feet of Jesus. Philippians 4:6–7 promises that His peace will guard your heart.
- Record God’s Faithfulness. Keep a journal of answered prayers and miracles. Looking back reminds you that the same God who moved then will move again.
- Serve Others Boldly. Every act of service – feeding the hungry, comforting the lonely, sharing the Gospel – is an opportunity to trust God to work through you.
A Call to Accept Jesus as Savior
Perhaps today you sense the Lord drawing you out of your comfort zone. You realise that faith isn’t simply about believing in God’s existence – but about trusting in Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. The Bible says, “for, everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13)
If you have never invited Jesus into your heart, I invite you now to step forward in faith. A simple prayer from a sincere heart can change your life forever:
Heavenly Father, I come before You now, acknowledging that I have fallen short of Your glory. I believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son, that He died on the cross for my sins and rose again on the third day. I repent of my sins and ask for Your forgiveness. I receive Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Please fill me with Your Holy Spirit and help me to walk in faith every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
If you prayed that prayer today, let someone know – your pastor, a friend, a family member or me – so we can rejoice with you and help you grow in faith.
Something to take home
Dear friends, faith is not a passive Christian creed; it is an active, living force that moves mountains, calms storms, and brings us into the very presence of God. As we finish this reading, let us carry the confidence of Hebrews 11:1 in our hearts. Let us step out of our comfort zones, trusting that the One who calls us is faithful – He will guide us, protect us, and fulfil His promises for His glory and our good.
Lets pray
May the Lord strengthen your faith, deepen your trust, and lead you into ever-greater adventures with Him. Walk by faith, not by sight, and watch as He turns your obedience into miracles. Amen.
Peace be with you – Muz.
