Note: Read A Tale of Old Jack before this one.
In the golden hues of the setting sun, the world seemed to stand still for Jack and Lily, the old biker couple whose love story was as legendary as their cross-country rides. Their leather jackets were worn, and their bikes had seen better days, but their spirits remained as adventurous as the day they met.
Lily, with her silver hair, turned to Jack, her eyes reflecting the lifetime they’d shared. “Don’t call the doctor,” she whispered, her voice as gentle as the breeze that carried it. “I want to fall asleep peacefully, with your hand in mine.”
Jack, his weathered face breaking into a smile, took her hand – a hand that had held his through countless journeys and storms. He spoke of the past, a tapestry of memories woven with laughter and tears. He recounted the day they met in the Lake District, where she had caught his eye at a biker rally. He reminisced about their first kiss, under a sky ablaze with stars, when they promised to ride together until the end of the road.
He thought of the cancer that would shortly be taking her from him, the long nights of sobs from deep pain. The initial fear that grips everyone when they are given the diagnosis and the reality that we are all finite. But Lily wasn’t scared of the hereafter (Proverbs 12:28), as he knew that Lily had her faith, just as he had.
Lily winced and held onto him tighter. He had given her the last of the morphine dose and she had said to him – “No more my love, it’s nearly time for me to be in Glory.” (Zechariah 2:5)
They didn’t cry; they smiled. Smiles that spoke of miles travelled and challenges overcome. Smiles that said they’d do it all over again.
They didn’t regret anything; they were grateful. Grateful for the wild rides, the freedom of the open road, and the love that grew stronger with each passing mile.
Then, as the sun dipped below the horizon, Lily repeated softly, “I love you forever!” Her words were a tender echo of a lifetime of devotion.
Jack returned her words with a warmth that only decades of love could foster. He leaned down and gave her a soft kiss on the forehead, a silent vow that transcended time.
As the first stars of the evening began to twinkle, Lily closed her eyes and fell asleep peacefully, with a little child-like sigh, her hand securely in his. And there, Jack held Lily, knowing that their journey together was a ride that would never truly end.
Peace be with you – Muz.
